Complete Guide to Brave Sync
Security Notice:
Brave Sync uses a "Sync Code" based on the BIP39 word list. This code is sensitive and should be treated as securely as a password or recovery phrase. Anyone with your Sync Code can join your Sync chain and access synced data.
How to Use Brave Sync
- Open Brave browser on your device.
- Go to Settings > Sync.
- Create a new Sync chain or join an existing one using your Sync Code.
- On another device, repeat the process and enter the Sync Code to join the chain.
How Secure Is Brave Sync?
- Your Sync Code is essentially a cryptographic seed; keep it secret.
- Brave does not store your Sync Code or synced data.
- If someone obtains your Sync Code, they can access your synced bookmarks, history, passwords, etc.
- Use device-level security (OS password, biometrics) to protect your Sync Code.
Sync Code Recommendations
- Never share your Sync Code with anyone you don’t trust.
- Store your Sync Code in a secure password manager.
- Do not use screenshots or cloud notes for storage.
- If you suspect your Sync Code is compromised, remove devices from the Sync chain and create a new one.
Using the 25th Word
- The Brave Sync tool generates a time-based 25th word for Sync Codes.
- This word allows for time-limited joining or recovery, and changes daily.
- For best security, only use the 25th word as recommended by Brave, and never as your sole backup.
- Brave advises using the built-in export features for bookmarks and passwords for robust backup.
Additional Tips
- Always use the latest version of Brave for best security.
- Enable OS-level encryption where possible.
- Be cautious when syncing sensitive data between devices.
